Last night was Open Mike, where folks bring in prose, poems or music they have written and read for the group. Carol Mahler reads for me. This poem received favorable comments.
Democracy
by Henry B Stevens
11/23/2003
From the hightest earthly pinnacle
The Man said
"you're either for us
or you are against us"
I watched in horror
as I heard him
say it on live TV .
Democracy died before
the echo of his words (reverberated)
in that hallowed chamber
No discussion?
No dissent?
"we're right
you are wrong"
"my God is bigger
than your god"
"my God will win
you will die in sin"
All these words said
and repeated and
approved by the
MAN and his people
A possible majority of hanging chads
so close it couldn't be
counted
only annointed, not elected
is not a license to
hunt down the other half
vilify, label unpatriotic,
equate their
lack of faith
with sedition.
I'm an old man
i can afford to speak
Democracy is discussion
dissent, respect; yes, love
soon they will try to muzzle my speech
by putting a muzzle to my head
when I speak out,
they will pull the trigger
they'll pull the trigger millions of times
till they break the will
of those who still stand
against them,
stand against their God
Bless America
Amen
